Heavy Duty Castors and Castor Wheels

Choosing the right castor

  • Load rating: add up the weight of the equipment plus the heaviest load it will carry. Pick a set rated well above that, because on uneven floors one castor can carry more than its share.
  • Wheel size: bigger wheels roll more easily and handle rough floors, cracks and cables better. 100mm suits benches and trolleys, while 150–200mm suits heavy workshop and factory equipment.
  • Swivel, braked or fixed: swivel castors steer, braked castors lock the trolley in place, and fixed castors track straight. A common setup is 2 braked swivel at one end and 2 swivel or fixed at the other.

Wheel types

  • PU (polyurethane) wheels: quiet, smooth and kind to floors. Good all-rounders.
  • PU on cast iron: the same floor-friendly tread on a cast iron centre for higher loads and a longer life.
  • Nylon wheels: very high load ratings and low rolling resistance, best on smooth concrete.
