 GUIDELINES FOR ROAD PLATE USAGE:

  • Ensure the correct size is selected.
  • Provide adequate overlap; road plates should extend at least one foot beyond the pavement opening onto stable ground.
  • Properly Secure and feather edges with asphalt.
  • Welding is recommended when multiple steel plates are used and they butt up to each other.
  • Counter-sink plates when necessary for uneven roadways.
  • Apply an anti-skid coating to plates where required.
  • Mark/paint edges of steel plates for improved visibility.
  • Display proper advance warning signs, such as "Steel Plate Ahead" or "Bump."
  • Continuously reassess roadway and trench wall conditions throughout the day for safety.
  • Conduct end-of-day inspections before leaving the job.
